£2,350.00 Sold Out
Where: Sassi di Matera, Italy
When: 1-5th of September 2017
What: A Food, Art and Photography retreat, slowing things down, learning to be more present in our lives and in work through focusing on being in the moment.
We´ll explore the local food scene, learn to make pasta in a 9000 year old grotto, style and photograph food scenes working on composition and the use of light. We will work on post editing, and how to use social media to reach potential clients, further our work and to be able to make a living from our passion for food and photography.
Art: Each day we´ll begin with learning more about the great old master painters and sculptors, working on recognising their use of light, composition and visual storytelling, in addition to art wanders through galleries in our ancient town of Sassi di Matera. We´ll analyse their work and recreate their magical use of light and composition into our still-life and photography and learning a thing or too about their fascinating lives and work.
Food & Drink: This region of Italy has a rich yet humble food traditions that we´ll explore through our local, in-house cooks, leading us in pasta and dessert making sessions as well as cooking for us. Towards the end of the day we will gather for evening cocktail sessions led by mixologists, Theo Maxfield. You will learn a thing or two about drinks made with local botanicals and traditions.
Each day begins with freshly made breakfast in front of the cave fireplace. We´ll also explore the nearby restaurants focusing on local seasonal cuisine. With a one day excursion to Bari, a nearby seaside town guided by the wonderfully talented Elizabeth Minchilli, we´ll explore the local markets, local food traditions, enjoy lunch and dinner in quaint little places with emphasis on the local cuisine, before returning home to our caves at nightfall.
Photography: As a core and a red thread through this workshop is visual storytelling through photography, both on and offline, in building our photography skills, challenging our eye and slowing down. We´ll have hands on styling and photography sessions, as well as post production in Lightroom and learning about the use of the traditional dark room.
Accommodation: We´ll all be lodging in 9000 year old caves in the stunning hotel Sextantino carved into the mountinaisde of Sassi di Matera in southern Italy. This will also be our home base for our cooking sessions, food styling and photography.
